Professional Uniform Standards

When students are in uniform, they represent the profession of nursing and Beth-El College of Nursing and Health Sciences.  It is important for the student to project a professional image.  Please refer to course syllabus for any exceptions to these policies.

Standards – Acute Care Setting (In-Patient Hospital)

  • Women will wear a plain white uniform (of the student's choice).  A plain white or plain navy blue sweater may be worn with the uniform.  Students may choose a solid white scrub jacket or lab coat to wear over the uniform.  Students may select a style which compliments their body type and which gives them a professional and comfortable feeling. Scrubs or scrub type uniforms are not allowed except for specific clinical assignments. These exceptions will be stated in the syllabus for the course.

  • Men will wear a white collared shirt and white pants with a belt.

  • All students will wear the name tag and UCCS Photo ID which will be affixed to the upper left front of the uniform

  • Solid white shoes, including a white leather sport shoe, must be worn with uniforms.  Clogs with a strap may be worn while on the clinical areas.  Solid white opaque socks may be worn with pants, but white hose must be worn with the dress uniform.  Men must wear plain white socks and shoes.

  • Long hair must be secured in such a manner that it does not fall forward.  Men should maintain well groomed facial hair if present.

  • If the ears are pierced, only one pair of small post earrings which do not cover the ear lobe is permitted. Facial jewelry such as nose rings/studs or tongue rings/studs are not permitted.   Other jewelry permitted is wedding rings, watches or class rings.

  • Full white Beth-El nursing uniform is required for all hospital visits, including going to the hospital to pick up patient assignments.
  • Student will be allowed to wear Pro Packs/Nurse Packs in the clinical setting in the color of their choice.

  • Fingernails may be no longer than 1/4 inch above the finger tip. If nail polish is worn, it should only approximate skin color. Artificial nails may NOT be worn at any time.

  • Perfume and gum chewing are not permitted in the clinical setting.

  • Beth-El student name tag or agency volunteer name tag must be worn at all times.
  • You may not be able to go to some clinical agencies with visible tattoos.
  • All shirts must be tucked in.
  • NO JEANS AT ANY CLINICAL SITE

Standards – Business Attire (e.g. Community Health/Mental Health)

Women and Men will wear:

  • Pants: Khaki or Navy pants. Traditional/conservative style. No low rise or cargo pants. NO JEANS AT ANY CLINICAL SITE

  • Appropriate style where shirts can be tucked in with belt loops and belt.

  • Khaki or navy walking shorts (four inches above the knee) maybe worn at summer camp clinical experiences.

  • Shirts: White oxford button-down collar, long or short sleeved shirt, golf style shirt or BSNA golf style shirt with Beth-El Logo. Shirt must be long enough to be tucked into pants.

  • Shoes: Solid white, clean tennis shoes or shoes as specified.

  • Name tag: Beth-El student name tag or agency volunteer name tag must be worn at all times.

General professional uniform standard guidelines related to hair, jewelry and fingernails apply to community based practice settings. Please read course syllabus for any additional specific guidelines.

  • You may not be able to go to some clinical agencies with visible tattoos due to agency policy.
  • All shirts must be tucked in.

Compliance Standard

When the above standards are violated, the student will be verbally warned once and if unprofessional behavior continues, the person may placed on clinical probation.  

Hospital Property

Equipment, supplies and drugs which are the property of the clinical facility may not be utilized at any time for personal use.

Employment

A nursing student hired for any position by a health care facility legally may perform only the duties listed in the job description for that position, even though he/she may have more advanced skills in the student role.
