Rationale for BSN Course Placement

The program of studies for the baccalaureate degree in nursing at Beth-El College takes four years to complete.  Level I consists primarily of general education courses which provide a foundation for later nursing courses.  Students are provided with opportunity for a well-rounded academic experience including courses in the physical/biological sciences, psychosocial sciences and humanities.  Nursing content is introduced in year one to provide foundation concepts which introduce the student to the conceptual framework of the college, provide a basis in skills for the more advanced clinical courses to follow in years two, three and four and to introduce the student early in the college curriculum to nursing content thereby their career choice.

Nursing courses in year one and two include:

  • NURS 123 Theoretical Foundations of Practice

  • NURS 210 Introduction to Health Assessment

  • HSCI 101 Pharmacological Math

  • NURS 220 Fundamentals of Nursing Practice

  • HSCI 205 Pharmacology

Both Health Assessment and Fundamentals of Nursing Practice have a clinical laboratory component to the course.  Pharmacology HSCI 205 provides a basis for more complex theory/clinical integration.  The concept of human caring is used throughout the curriculum.  In year one, human caring is addressed as it applies to self care.  The student gains awareness of his/her own and other individual health needs.  The emphasis in the first two years is the acquisition of fundamental concepts to provide a basis for later studies and psychomotor skills.

The emphasis in year three is human caring with individual clients.  Nursing courses for this year include:

  • NURS 310 Mental Health Nursing

  • NURS 320/321 Nursing Care of Adults I and II

  • NURS 311 Gerontological Nursing

  • HSCI  206 Statistics

  • NURS 401 Nursing Research

  • HSCI 301 Pathophysiology

The emphasis in year four is nursing content offered for care of groups, families and complex systems; human caring of systems.  Clinical Nursing courses include:

  • NURS 410 Nursing Care of Children

  • NURS 420 Nursing Care of the Childbearing Family

  • NURS 429 Advanced Nursing

  • NURS 430 Leadership and Management

  • NURS 440 Community Health Nursing

Students are given the opportunity to expand their interest and competencies by selecting nursing and non/nursing electives.  Required elective courses may be completed at the discretion of the student.

Advanced placement RN students are considered year three students throughout the program of study.

RNs and LPN's will be granted advanced placement in the program and their program is devised so that they accomplish the same program objectives as the basic student.  Beth-El College encourages upward mobility of the LPN and the RN and recognizes the unique abilities of practicing clinicians within the curriculum framework.
