Choosing and Reaching Reading Goals Lessons

In these lessons students learn to set and accomplish goals to help them meet reading standards. Students learn the reading standard they are expected to meet, “Students will read and understand a variety of materials.” Students evaluate themselves on reading skills that will help them meet the standard and use that information to set their reading goals. They write and complete plans to accomplish their goals, then evaluate and graph their progress. Periodically the teacher and students review their progress and make any needed adjustments to their goals or plans.

  1. Introduce standards
  2. Introduce the reading standard: Students will read and understand a variety of materials
  3. Introduce evaluate
  4. Introduce self-evaluation
  5. Practice using the self-evaluation scale
  6. Self-evaluate decoding
  7. Self-evaluate sequencing
  8. Students conference with teacher to discuss evaluations and choose skill to work on
  9. Students who chose decoding complete goals
  10. Students who chose sequencing complete goals
  11. a Students with decoding goals graph their decoding evaluations
    b Students with sequencing goals graph their sequencing evaluations
  12. Introduce plans
  13. Students write own plans
  14. Introduce Adjust Flow Chart
  15. Students complete Adjust Flow Chart to adjust goals, plans, or actions
  16. Students conference with teacher to assess lesson content knowledge
