  Complete Instructions for Applying

Instructions for filling out applications for admission to graduate study in the Beth El College of Nursing and Health Sciences, the Graduate School of Business, the Graduate School of Education, the College of Engineering and Applied Science, the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences, and the Graduate School of Public Affairs.

All applications, transcripts, and supporting credentials are to be forwarded directly to the department in which you wish to study. All correspondence in reference to your application is to be sent to that same department. Applicants who are citizens of the United States or permanent residents of this country should use this form. Those holding any type of temporary visa are required to use the application designed for foreign students, which may be obtained from the department in which the student plans to study.

Departments will not consider applications for admission until the department has received all application materials including letters of recommendation, transcripts, and the $60 application fee ($75 for International Students). The application fee must be attached to the application before it is submitted. Applicants are advised to submit a check or money order (not cash) made payable to the University of Colorado. This fee is nonrefundable and does not apply to tuition and fees. Applications and credentials submitted for admission become the permanent property of the University.

  1. Please follow these instructions when completing the forms:
    1. Give full name, including former names under which materials pertinent to this application may be found.
    2. Social Security numbers are used for record keeping and identification of students.
    3. Major codes are listed at the bottom of this page. If you are applying for both a primary and a secondary program, a complete application must be submitted to both departments.
    4. Do not disregard any part of your previous record.
    5. Be sure to sign the application.
    6. If you will have been domiciled in the state of Colorado for the 12 consecutive months prior to the first day of classes for the term for which you are applying, or if you, your spouse, or your parent are active-duty members of the armed forces on permanent duty stationed in Colorado, and believe you qualify for in-state tuition status, complete the In-state Tuition Classification Application form.

  2. Complete the necessary information at the top and bottom of the recommendation forms included with this application. Give one form to each person from whom a recommendation is requested. It is important that those recommending you evaluate your competence and potential as a graduate student and that they be advised of the proper departmental address to which the recommendations should be sent. (Recommendations should not be sent to the Graduate School or the Office of Admissions).

  3. Request that two official copies of your transcript(s) from each college or university you have attended be sent directly from the issuing institution to the department to which you are applying for admission. (Transcripts should not be sent to the Graduate School or Office of Admissions). While credits from one institution may appear on the transcript of a second institution, transcripts must be submitted from each institution, regardless of the length of attendance, and whether or not the courses were completed. Official transcripts exhibit the official seal and signature of the registrar. Transcripts that are marked "student copy," "issued to the student," or "unofficial" are not accepted as official and cannot be used in the admission decision.
  4. Each department or school determines its own deadline for students to submit the application with complete credentials, usually five to eight months prior to the beginning of the semester or term of application. Therefore, contact the department or school to which you are applying for your specific deadline date. The University of Colorado has limitations on enrollment, and applications are considered until such time as enrollment levels are reached.

  5. Scores on specific examinations are required in some instances. Refer to information provided by the department or school to which you are making application to determine what is required.

  6. For information concerning financial aid to graduate students, contact the Office of Financial Aid at (719) 262-3460, your graduate department, or visit the Financial Aid Office Web site.

  7. Persons who do not wish to work toward an advanced degree but wish to take additional course work are advised to contact the Office of Admissions on the campus where they wish to study for information regarding non-degree student status. Students should clearly understand the regulations regarding non-degree student status before enrolling. These are limitations in the amount of graduate-level course work taken as a non-degree student which may apply toward a graduate degree at the University of Colorado.

  8. Applicants submitting supplementary materials to support their applications are requested to clearly mark the materials indicating name and student number, contents, and purpose for which submitted. In addition, sufficient postage must be included if the materials are to be returned to the applicant.
