Homework: Merge Files - Add Cases

Value: 15 pts;
Date Due: the beginning of the next class.

1.  The first task is to build on what we did during the merge files - all cases lecture to create a master database for all the skills surveys from 1988 through 1999.  In class we created a database that included the skills surveys from 1998, 1997, and 1996. You are to add your own  skills survey data from 1999, and the archival data from 1995 back through 1988.

Notes for merging skills95.sav: We still want to keep the variables date[*], maj_othr>[*], spsswin[*], win97[*] and wordproc>[*], move them to the new working data file window.  Leave spsspc[+] and windows[+] in the unpaired window.

Notes for merging skills94.sav, skills93.sav, skills92.sav, skills91.sav, skills90.sav, skills89.sav, and skills88.sav: Move all the asterisked variables [date(*), emacs(*), maj_othr>(*), spsswin(*), unix(*), win97(*), and wordproc>(*)] to the new working data file. Leave the other variables in the unpaired window.

2Save this database as skills88_99.sav.

- Run frequencies for the variable Year (Year of survey). Make a copy of the frequencies table and hand it in with this homework.  If you have the correct number of cases for each year you accumulate 5 points  (5 pts).

3.  Using skills88_99.sav, test the hypothesis that graduate students will claim greater knowledge of simple analysis of variance than will undergraduates.  Test this hypothesis using an appropriate chi-square analysis.  (3 pts)

4. Run an appropriate measure of association for this data  (2 pts).

5. Describe the results of the test of the hypothesis using both the chi square results and the measure of association results. Write the results as they might appear in an APA journal. (4 pts)

6. Include a table reporting the chi square frequencies and appropriate percentages. (1 pt)
